When Leon and Rita Tokar purchased the property of Tokar Estate in June 1995, the land was covered in thistles, tussock grass and snakes. The plan was initially to produce grapes for their own consumption only – “to play at making wine ourselves, for ourselves”.

Paul Evans was the resident Wine Maker at Tokar Estate and was responsible for the creation of all Tokar Estate Wines.
Paul has been the Wine Maker for Tokar Estate since the very first vintage in 1999. Both Paul Evans and Leon Tokar share the same vision when it comes to wine making, that is: of making premium wines which showcase the Yarra Valley and Tokar Estate.Paul started his wine making career at Domaine Chandon, followed by Oakridge Estate and now Tokar Estate.
We now have a new Wine Maker at Tokar Estate. Rob Dolan & Co have now taken over the Wine Making duties.
Rob Dolan brings with him a wealth of experience which will only add more quality to the already fine quality wines that Tokar Estate produces in the Yarra Valley.
The Winery now has 9 wines available for tasting and sales. These include: the 2005 Joie De Vie ‘Sparkling’, 2006 Chardonnay, 2008 Tempra Rosa, 2006 Pinot Noir, 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2007 Shiraz and their “Signature wine” the 2006 Tempranillo – a superb Spanish varietal of which Tokar Estate is extremely pleased to be the first vineyard in the Yarra Valley to produce wine from this variety.
Leon and Rita Tokar have long been passionate cooks for their own family and friends, often envisioning owning and running a Restaurant of their very own creation one day. Their dream was finally realised when, on a glorious summer day in January 2003 they opened Tokar Estate Restaurant; bringing an exotic feel to the picturesque Yarra Valley by introducing “a slice of the Mediterranean” to the region.
With the Restaurant dishing up stylish cuisine, peppered with strong Mediterranean influences, and a fabulous outdoor decking and dining area overlooking the stunning surrounding vineyards,Yarra Valley and exquisite skyline; one could certainly imagine themselves to be far off in an exotic overseas location, as they sample sumptuous dishes and sip perfectly matched wines, such as our award winning Spanish Tempranillo.
